The latest installment of my Self-Portrait Project: November’s self-portrait was a one-light personal challenge. For the techies, it was lit with a single strobe (f/5.6) and 10° gridspot.

That would a great album cover. Now you have to start a band.
Fantastic shot Ryan – very well done. So, I’m new to off-camera flash photography – was the room completely dark when the flash fired?
Hi Tyler! Thanks for your kind words. The room was definitely not completely dark when the flash fired. There were several lights on, but compared to the intensity of the strobe, the other lights were much less powerful.
For more on off-camera flash info, check out David Hobby and his Strobist blog. Also, Zack Arias is another one to watch. He does a workshop called One Light that’s got some great information for off-camera lighting.
