2011 McHenry Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

On April 16, 2011 I photographed the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk in McHenry, IL. About 160 walkers braved the 40° temp mixed with wind and rain. By doing so they helped raise more than $11,000 that goes toward “AFSP’s (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, advocate for mental health issues, and assist survivors of suicide loss” (from afsp.org). Having personally been affected by suicide and experienced its impact on my family, this is a cause I feel strongly about and am glad to help with my photography.

This year my asssistant Brian Bieschke joined me to document this campus walk (although neither of us walked the route because rain and cameras don’t always get along). The walk route went from McHenry West high school to McHenry East high school and back. Afterwards, walkers and volunteers mingled and enjoyed pizza and beverages—and tried to warm up and dry out!

Thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored, donated and prayed for this event! While it’s sad to see just how many people have been personally affected by suicide and mental illness, it’s encouraging to see how many are willing to support this worthy cause.

I’m Giving Away a Brand New Session!

Want to do something nice for someone else? Of course, we all do, so here’s your opportunity! I’m giving away a Brand New session (newborn portrait session, $150 value) to a family with a new addition on the way. But I’m going to let you tell me who should get it.

Nominate someone you think should receive this complimentary session by leaving a comment* on this blog post. Tell me who they are, where they live and why you think they should receive it (you don’t have to use last names if you don’t want). I’m looking for a family who is having their baby in the next 3 months (at least before Christmas). Preferably, nominations should be within 20-25 miles of Woodstock.

Don’t wait too long to nominate, the deadline for this giveaway is Sept. 25, 2010. The session is free, prints remain regular price.

*Comments must be made on the blog post, not on Facebook.

Out of the Darkness Campus Walk, McHenry IL

On April 17th I photographed the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk in McHenry, Illinois. It was the first time this suicide awareness and prevention walk took place in the area, and the response was very encouraging. More than 200 walkers attended and raised more than $14,000—exceeding the goal of $10,000! Thanks to all who participated, walked and donated to this very worthy cause.

Here are some photos from the walk:
